The figure

The professor of the box. He doesn't guess where the ball will land — he arrives there early. His passes pierce the pitch, and keepers talk about his shots from outside the area for years. Slow for a sprinter — but the game is played at his pace.

The story

The industrial outskirts of a sprawling city. As a boy, academy doors slammed shut in his face one after another: coaches shook their heads, claiming he was too sluggish and had no future in the game.
